Shout Factory keeps churning out the classics with their Scream Factory label but not all of them are always horror films. Before Sam Raimi took on Marvel’s wallcrawler in the Spider-Man franchise he brought another dark superhero to the big screen with 1990s Darkman starring Liam Neeson, Frances McDormand and Larry Drake. Now Scream Factory is bringing and all-new Collector’s Edition of Darkman to Blu-ray with brand new original cover art.

If you were literally living in the dark and have never seen the film, it follows a scientist who has discovered a way to produce synthetic skin. This could revolutionize skin grafting, except for one minor glitch; the synthetic skin degrades after 100 minutes of exposure to light. When gangsters attack him, he is horrifically burnt, and assumed dead. In his quest for revenge, he become Darkman, and is able to take on the appearance of anyone but he only has 100 minutes per disguise. This is one of those films you either really like or most likely cannot stand. It is pretty cheesy, but in a good way. Raimi set out to make a comic book movie and that is exactly what he delivered. It is very stylized like most of his work used to be and offers a direction that most would have expected from this genre at the time. On the flip side he created a story that executes like a classic horror movie similar to the Phantom of the Opera that makes for a way more compelling direction. Despite not getting to see Neeson’s face all that much in the film, he still manages to emote so much emotion just through his eyes that you feel the pain of the character and helped to elevate this film to level outside B-cinema. There is a certain classic charm to this film that just works and holds up even now. This is a character that should have continued on and evolved way better than the two straight to video sequels delivered.

In addition to the hi-def transfer of this cult hit this Blu-ray also features interviews, commentaries, trailers, vintage profiles and press kits, and featurettes making it the must have for any fan of Darkman. Be sure to grab your copy of Darkman Collector’s Edition available now.
