Hey everyone. I hope that everyone has enjoyed his or her spring break. Or as we say in fandom, more time to do stuff that we like break. With that said, it is time for another Short Stack Reviews. Let’s get in to it.
Wonder Woman #609: I use to think that March Madness was strictly for college basketball. After reading this issue it has become clear that March Madness affects all things that come out in March. This issue of Wonder Woman was beyond ridiculous. If there were another Wonder Woman title out there then I would be reading that instead. However, there is not. Doctor Psycho enters Diana’s mind to show Diana her true origin….all of them, even the one’s that she never lived. The kicker is that Diana starts to remember them because it turns out that her spirit, or “essence” has lived all these lives. After a lovely heart to heart with one of her most dangerous enemies, Doctor Psycho gives one last bit of advice to the would be Wonder Woman with “Create Yourself”. It feels to me as if this is the excuse DC is going to use to keep Wonder Woman in this revamped stage after the current story arc. By making Wonder Woman an essence instead of an actual character then they are free to reinvent her whenever she becomes stale. This comes in handy so that there is no pressure to actually write good stories. Why write a good story with what has already been established when you could simply change everything? Diana finally awakens from her soul search in the hospital. Look at the nametag of the RN. That hurts my spirit. Also, since when do hospitals use American flags as bed sheets? Sigh.
I’m sending out a challenge to DC Comics. I want five minutes of your time, just five minutes. I have a five-year plan for Wonder Woman and I want to pitch the idea to you. You have nothing to lose by listening to me, and everything to gain. Don’t wait too long on this.
The Walking Dead #83: Tense is too mild of a word to describe this issue. After making a bold statement last issue, Rick and company find themselves divided. Rick and a few others decide to make a break for it using a trick that worked early on in the series. This time…not so much. There was one moment that completely blew my mind. Well, Carl’s a little bit more than mine.
I’m not going to say that Rick was out of character, because I have no idea how I would react if swarms of zombies were surrounding me and the people I was with. I will say that I don’t recall Rick ever being as selfish as he was in this issue. He’s always had that protective mother hen attribute and here he was only looking out of number one. Nevertheless, this was an outstanding issue.
Captain America #616: Bucky finds himself in a Russian prison due to crimes against humanity that he was responsible for during his time as the Winter Soldier. Brubaker writes amazing jailhouse stories; it’s just that he’s already written this in different forms. Batman was in jail, Daredevil was in jail, and now Bucky is in jail. I know that he has to have more stories in him than that. Last week’s Captain America 615.1 issue featured someone else trying to be Captain America. Multiple Captain Americas have been a recurring theme within this title as well. Granted, Ed Brubaker’s recycled material is still better than a lot of stuff out there on the market, but I would like to see something fresh from my favorite writer.
Quote of the Week: “That’s sweet. In a profoundly creepy way.” – Wonder Woman from Wonder Woman #609.
