Short Stack Reviews: Citizen Cold, Aquaman, Booster Gold

It is hard to believe that we are only three Wednesdays away from a fanboy meltdown A.K.A. the DC Comics reboot.  In happier notes, if you are a box holder at Atomic Comics in Phoenix then this past week you enjoyed a special 25% off sale for said box holders.  Due to that, I got to pick up a little gem the legacy edition of the Eisner Award nominee comic The Cape #0.  This is not, I repeat NOT, based on the miserable NBC show of the same name.  It is, however, based on awesome.  If you get a chance, I highly recommend checking this book out.  It is a very unique take on superhero comics.  Speaking of which, we have some reviews to do.  Let’s get in to it.

Flashpoint: Citizen Cold #3: Well, it was better than last issue.  Citizen Cold is fighting for his life against the Rogues.  Meanwhile, Iris West, aunt of the recently deceased Wally West, is waiting at Citizen Cold’s swinging bachelor pad for Central City’s greatest “hero” to return home so they can…. um…wait, why did she go there?  I’ve noticed that the Flashpoint Universe is extremely violent, and this issue is no exception.  This issue also ends more like a cliffhanger than a finale to a mini-series, which would be fine if there were a possibility of it continuing down the line.  Since this isn’t “real” than that is very unlikely.  Also, most of the Flashpoint mini-series have seemed to end the exact same way, with the death of a major character to the story.  I’m also having a difficult time getting past the Pied Piper’s corny dialogue.  Citizen Cold was a story that did not need to be told.  Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

Flashpoint: Emperor Aquaman #3: We get to see the Aquaman/Wonder Woman war from the side of Aquaman.  The writer’s of each of mini-series must be working closely together, because I felt like I was rereading everything.  I kept thinking that this scene already happened, and this scene already happened, and so forth.  Then I realized it was suppose to be from Aquaman’s point of view.  Sadly, there wasn’t any new insight to it.  If anything, it made Aquaman look like even more of jerk.  Granted, if you’re ability is to swim really well and talk to fish then you have a right to be a jerk.  But still….  Rating: 3 out of 5.

Booster Gold #47: First off, there were two artists on this issue.  Two. That can be very distracting at times.  Especially, when one of those artists doesn’t bring anything worthwhile to the table.  Booster Gold has a plan to change the Flashpoint Universe back to the original.  Unfortunately, in a battle with an out of control Doomsday, Booster’s suit is damaged and it is the only thing that is helping him remember how the universe should be.  It reads really well, and Booster Gold has always been a solid comic.  However, I have a few issues with this issue.  The woman that Booster teamed up with last issue, the one that has the ability to absorb and use other people’s abilities, does something odd here.  Rather than absorb Doomsday’s powers and beat the tar out of him, she uses a mind control technique that the government created and has Doomsday attack himself.  Then she’s worried that if Booster succeeds and changes everything that their time together will be erased, which in comic book time has been a couple of hours, and Booster PROMISES her the he will take her with him.  What?  What is this, Thor?  Are you that hard pressed, Booster, to find a girlfriend that you have to take them from alternate timelines?  It’s suppose to be this moving gesture but it is kind of hard to swallow when he’s only known her for a couple of hours.  He should be asking why she’s so attached so quickly, and be like “it’s been real, it’s been fun, hasn’t been real fun” and then peace out.  Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
