Every so often, a great story comes along that generates a love for a new activity. One of the most popular books (and now movie) is The Hunger Games in which a teenager named Katniss Everdeen is forced to compete in a deadly game for the Capitol’s entertainment. Unlike a lot of female characters, Katniss is strong. She has had to feed her family by hunting game with a bow and arrows. This gives female readers a look into a sport they may have otherwise overlooked – archery. The story has touched many readers. By early 2010 alone it had sold over 800,000 copies. The opening weekend of the film adaptation brought in $152.5 million. The DVD and Blu-Ray recently came out sending fans (including me) running to the nearest San Jose store for our own copy. With all these fans, the book has got to be influential. Yahoo.com recently published an article about the rapid rise in archery amongst females. This was due simply to a book, The Hunger Games. It’s amazing what books can do!
If you too are interested in following in Katniss’ footsteps (minus the whole death arena thing), then you’ll need a good bow. If you are limited by the bow, you won’t be able to improve as well as you would have with a good quality bow. The solution is the Adventure 2.0 by October Mountain Products. This incredibly stunning recurve bow is a takedown, meaning it can be broken down into three sections for easy storage or for traveling: the two laminated wood limbs and the riser (which includes the grip and bowstring). The bow is made of beautifully well-crafted wood that is very comfortable to hold onto during long practice sessions. I’ve used other bows that start hurting your hand in a matter of minutes, but this one fits the hand perfectly. It comes with a nice sturdy bowstring, but it doesn’t include a choke bead. You can buy one of these at your local archery store, and it’s a good thing to have to steady the nock against when the bowstring is drawn back.
The one thing I noticed about the bow is that, when shot or “loosed” (as is the archery term), the arrow’s feathers or fletchings will cut into the wood of the arrow rest over time. An easy solution is to add a piece of felt or foam. It will need to be replaced eventually, but it’s a very simple and cheap fix.
The bow only comes with the bow and bowstring (no quiver or arrows), but it does have built-in spots for accessories such as a sight should you want to add one on. Like Katniss, I prefer the bow to be old school.
Due to my abilities and skill level, I chose the 54” 24lb right-handed bow (they do have other options, including left-handed models). It works like a dream. The bow does its job beautifully. Even on a long camping trip, I was able to breakdown the bow quickly and store it in my quiver while traveling. Simply screwing in both limbs to the riser easily assembled it. This great design allows for portability without sacrificing any quality.
The bow is $129.99, but if you intend to use it and practice, it’s worth it. Already, I’ve seen my skill level grow. You never know, maybe I’ll be as good as Katniss Everdeen!
Shoot straight, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
