The label adorned with the pirate Blackbeard is your first introduction to Shipyard Brewing Company’s Black IPA, 6.2%abv. This Portland, Maine brewery’s black IPA uses dark roasted malt and bitter hops to achieve this satisfying ale. Poured into the glass it is opaque black with a dark tan head. Typical IPA indicators such as pink grapefruit and other citrus aromas let you know this is hopped up IPA. The roasted malt, espresso and dark cacao aromas let you know this dark ale has more to it than a standard IPA. Combine these elements on the palate and you have a beer that satisfies the hop lovers palate and those who crave roasted malt flavors. It does have a short dry malty finish, a very nice ale to enjoy. Drink with a rich beefy stew. I would even add a bottle to the stew for extra flavors to liven up the dish.
