The Walt Disney Concert Hall was the place to be New Year’s Eve as Emmy Nominee Sheila E. and Oscar Nominee, composer, bandleader Sergio Mendes rang in 2014 at the stroke of midnight. As the capacity audience hugged and kissed each other, colorful streamers floated over them and Mendes’ band as Sheila E. joined them on stage to perform “Pais Tropical.”
Sheila E. kicked off the festivities with her band’s “Samba Funk” and quickly segued into “Leader of the Band.” Dressed in a skin-tight white dress and her trademark stilettos, the “Queen of the Congas” brought the audience to their feet time and time again with her energetic performances and star-studded vocals. The lovely composer, singer, bandleader also played her blinged out timbales with vigor and power and on a couple of occasions, threw her sticks into the grateful audience. Hit after hit rang through the hall and couples were dancing in the aisles and hallways! “Love Bizarre,” “Rockstar,” “Mona Lisa,” and her mega hit “Glamorous Life,” proved to be just the right recipe for this perfect New Year’s Eve.
Sergio Mendes’ debut appearance at Walt Disney Concert Hall was well-received as he performed many of his memorable hits with Brazil 66 and his current band. Guest rapper H20 was an added delight for the reprise of “Mas Que Nada.” Many of Mendes’ hits including “Waters of March,” “Fool On The Hill,” “Never Gonna Let You Go,” and his finale “Real In Rio-Tristeza (with Brazilian dancers) brought major ovations from the audience and provided them with memories of Mendes’ reign as the prince of bossa nova here in the USA.The night ended with Brazilian dancers and the entire ensemble of both bands on stage. With thousands of happy revelers all over the downtown area, a great time was had by all. Happy New Year!
