The tiny corner shop is a family business with made-from-scratch fruit and meat pies, all created from Mennonite recipes. They don’t keep all 20 fruit pies and eight meat pies in the cases at one time, but will bake a special flavor to order.
While there are the regular cherry, peach and apple pies in season, some varieties may be new to travelers to Ontario: raspberry/rhubarb custard, bumbleberry (mixed fruit) lemon sponge, raisin and shoofly. To try a new flavor and see how they like it, shoppers can pick up miniature pies.
Sweet and meaty pies
On the savory side, Shakespeare Pies bakes meat pies of beef, chicken, steak and mushroom, steak and kidney, turkey and a flavor called Tex Mex. A specialty is tortiere, a traditional Quebecois meat pie with seasonings that often evoke the holidays: cinnamon and nutmeg.
The small shop also has local honey, homemade relishes and jams, and fresh bread.
For travelers in their own self-catering apartments, Shakespeare has meals-to-go such as lasagna, steak and potatoes, turkey casserole and chicken and rice. Followed, of course, by a nice slice of pie.
