Any fan of westerns knows the name of Sergio Leone. He was the master of the Spaghetti Western with classics like The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, A Fistfull of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More to name a few. One of his classics is finally getting the Blu-ray treatment with the 40th Anniversary Edition of My Name is Nobody starring Henry Fonda and Terrence Hill.
In case you have never seen this classic it follows one of the West’s greatest gunslingers who wants to just retire in peace, but when a young gunfighter known as “Nobody” who idolizes him shows up all he wants is for him to go out in a blaze of glory. To help him earn his place in history he arranges for him to face off against a 150-man gang known as The Wild Bunch. Depending on the western, much like many films they really show their age. There are only a select few that have really become timeless. Of these Sergio Leone is the master of the Spaghetti Western and this is easily one his best. The film mixes humor, drama, and action to create something unique to the genre. The story moves at a great pace with very little to it, but just enough to make it interesting and to keep you on your toes. While they have both done a ton of work Fonda and Hill are two of those classic actors that were born for the western. Fonda plays the part of the aged gunslinger to perfection bringing both the wisdom and tired nature of the character. Hill brings the more light hearted nature to the role while still manages to be a cool gunslinger worthy of being the next in line for the title of greatest gunslinger. This western plays serious but also has numerous comedic aspects and as silly as some are still works well within this film and adding to the overall entertainment of the entire experience.
While this release doesn’t sport any special features, the film alone is worth checking out. This is a classic western that even those that aren’t fans of the western will be sure to enjoy. Hopefully this release will spark more special editions of not only Leone’s westerns but Terrence Hill’s films like the Trinity series and Superfuzz.
