Every couple of years, the iPhone changes its form factor, thereby, requiring a new case. In the past, I had sided on rugged cases made from multiple layers of silicone and plastic. Yet, these aforementioned designs added excessive bulk to the phone and, in terms of fashion, would appear only suitable on Batman’s utility belt. As this author’s birthday readily approaches and I transition into adulthood, my tastes have shifted toward a more professional style.
After much internet research, one case manufacturer, Sena Cases, appeared multiple times on CNET’s “Best iPhone 5 cases” as well as consistently received high reviews on Amazon.com. After visiting Sena’s website, I decided on one of their most popular models, the Magnet Flipper. I chose the classic color of black leather, yet according to their website, there are 12 additional colors including tan, red, baby blue, green, orange, brown, white, croco black, croco red, croco burgundy, croco tan, and pink. “Croco” is textured leather with the appearance of crocodile hide.
In-person, the first characteristic that impressed me about Sena’s Magnet Flipper was the quality of the leather (i.e., the smell, the sheen, and texture all indicated that this was a premiere, full grain material). Moreover, the craftsmanship was impeccable, e.g., all the stitches pristinely in place, with the case fitting perfectly over the phone. The openings for the ports, buttons, and camera were excellently aligned as well. My iPhone slid into the body of the case and was held in place by a strap of leather that snapped onto the back. A flap of leather (i.e., with a 180° range of motion) protected the iPhone’s screen when locked via two hidden magnets onto the front of the case. The front, leather flap (customizable with embossing for $9.99) had a pocket to hold a credit card or business card, if desired. Lastly, the Magnet Flipper included a belt clip that could be optionally attached to the case.
In the past, I had spuriously convinced myself that luxurious cases would be too expensive; yet, at $54.95, the Magnet Flipper is a bargain. The following quote comes to mind, “when I became a man, I put away childish things.” I am excited about the professional appearance of this Sena case and am never returning to those clunky, unattractive cases of my youth. I highly recommend Sena’s Magnet Flipper for the iPhone 5.
