One of the year’s best films Silver Linings Playbook is still in theaters and should be seen on the big screen if you haven’t had a chance to make it in yet. David O. Russell wrote and directed this brilliant film which has a strong cast and filled with amazing performances.
I was late on making it in to the theater to catch this film, there have been a lot of great films out and to be honest up until now I haven’t been thoroughly impressed with Bradley Cooper or Jennifer Lawrence. However, this film changed a lot of my opinions. Bradley Cooper impressed me with his performance as Pat Solitano, a former teacher who suffers from severe bi-polar disorder and is recently released from his eight month stint in a mental institution. He moves home with his parents to get back on track with his life and complete his own agenda, which it to make things right with his wife Tiffany who has a restraining order out against him. Things soon become more difficult as Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) the sister of his friend’s wife, she has personal issues of her own following the recent passing of her husband. Pat and Tiffany both struggle in dealing with their mental disorders and soon realize what is important to find their true happiness.
Robert De Niro also recognized for his expected perfect performance, plays Pat’s father Pat Sr. He suffers from OCD and has a problem with his sports betting. His son drives him crazy at times but he cannot explain the good luck he believes Pat Jr. brings his beloved Philadelphia Eagles. He tries to manipulate Pat for his own benefit and soon acknowledges the type of father he has become.
David O. Russell outdoes himself with this story; nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay in countless award shows, including The Oscars. The film also had a total of eight Academy nominations, including one for each acting category for both male and female leading roles, along with supporting roles.
I always rate a film based on if it needs to be seen in theaters and if it worth the wait for Red Box or DVD purchase. Silver Linings Playbook is worth seeing on the big screen and will quite possibly end up in my film collection. With probably just a few more weeks left in theaters, be sure to make it in.
