See International Art at SD Museum of Art to appreciate New Year

You can still see the world of art while you are at home for New Years. Two of the special exhibitions at the San Diego Museum of Art have brought world class art to Balboa Park.

“Mexican Modern Painting” displays 80 paintings by masters of 20th Century Mexican painting: María Izquierdo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo, Alfonso Michel, Federico Cantú, and Angel Zárraga and many others. Several of the works exhibit the heritage of Mexico’s monumental sculpture and architectural complexes and the way they have inspired Mexican painters to approach realism with three dimensional qualities that practically come to life from a distance. It compliments the permanent collection of the San Diego Museum of Art, which surveys Mexican art and sculpture. Next Friday, January 6, at 7 p.m. there will be a special showing at the Museum of a Mexican film from this period, “Flor Silvestre” from 1943. There will also be a talk about artists in the special exhibition by Amy Galpin, Project Curator for American Art, on January 20. A catalog of “Mexican Modern Painting” is also available.

“A Harmony of Line” displays works by many of the modernists whose works are on display at the Getty Villa’s spectacular “Modern Antiquity” exhibition. These works chronicle the period when artists were drawn to Paris and experimented with innovative printmaking and etching techniques. Some emphasized the economy of bold, black lines to make just a few features distinctive and unforgettable. Others displayed trendsetting applications of color as illustration artists used their talents to keep ahead of the introduction of color photography. This opportunity to see “works on paper” by renowned painters shows how their versatility with different artistic media helped to refine their artistic styles.
