Based off the 1962 film of the same name, the 1978 Western drama television series “How the West Was Won” was an epic tale of the Macahan family as it struggles with settling out west away from the Civil War and all sorts of situations such a migration would ensue. Available July 15 with an SRP of $39.98, the second season of “How the West Was Won” continues Zebulon Macahan’s family endeavors that include being chased by the law, conflicts with foreign visitors, and just trying to survive the harsh untamed environment of the Western genre.
Audiences these days have been rather cold to the Western genre and part of the blame can rest on Seth MacFarlane. So rather than reinvent the Western wheel, the “How the West Was Won” television series is a great opportunity to relive those rough & tumble days of period drama. “How the West Was Won” bring back old school television production & storytelling with episodes full of stunning landscapes, drama depicting the struggle of an average family trying to make it in the unforgiving Western environment, and episodes spanning between about 50 minutes to nearly 2.5 hours. As it is a 70s show, expect to see plenty of television guest stars like Ricardo Montalban, William Shatner (those two save their fighting for outer space), Tim Matheson, and Lloyd Bridges.
All in all, “How the West Was Won” is a nice slice of period television. It's not a pretty tale, but it still has a story to tell.
