Recently opened in the Fall of 2010 along Miracle Mile, Seasons 52 already has my seal of approval for creative healthy cooking. Many times we equate healthy with bland, but this restaurant goes beyond that to establish itself as full of flavorful appetizers and entrees. With the added bonus that all menu items have below 500 calories, your sole task is to pick smart and enjoy.
I have just recently visited this restaurant – with friends a few weeks ago and just this past Friday – and I would strongly recommend it. Upon arriving, we were greeted by their courteous staff and seated right away. Make reservations though, otherwise you might risk waiting for a very long time. The restaurant was quickly filled on both occasions.
Our wonderful server, Drew, coincidentally took care of us both times. He suggested a wonderful Riesling and was very knowledgeable about the dishes and their ingredients. I tried to sample different things on both occasions to get a good grasp of what was good.
My favorites were:
Flatbreads - The Steak & Cremini Flatbread. This was the best tasting flatbread of all. Flavor 5 stars. Downside: This appetizer has 450 calories, but 17 grams of fat. With about 8 pieces, I’d say try to stick to 2. In second place, I would recommend the Spicy Chipotle Shrimp Flatbread. Flavor 4.5 stars, with 420 cal. and 11g of fat. Again, with just about 8 pieces, try sticking to 2-3 pieces. Of the flatbreads, the one with the lowest and best calorie to fat and portion ratio is the Smoked Salmon Flatbread with 360 cal. and 9 grams of fat. Use your judgment, but you can probably go for 3 – 4 pieces on this last one.
Entrees – The Caramelized Sea Scallops were fantastic in flavor, but again, the downside is that with 450 cal. and 14g of fat, you might want to reconsider dessert if you are having an appetizer. The Quail With Bourbon Chili Sauce was brilliant too with a side of greens beans, asparagus, and the oh-so-my-favorite sweet potatoes with 360 cal. and 6g of fat. I had never sampled quail, but it was quite tasty and tender. No, it didn’t taste like chicken. Both of these were very satisfying.
Dessert - These are laid out in shot glasses, but don't let the size outsmart you. I loved the Carrot Cake. With 280cal. and 9g of fat, it's worth sharing giving a new meaning to "divide and conquer." You might want to stay away from the Rocky Road with 20g of fat, a bit much for a shot glass sized dessert.
I love the fact that the calorie counting has been done already. My recommendation would be to keep in mind that yes, every menu item has below 500 calories, but if two appetizers and two entrees are selected by a party of two, you are well on your way to a calorie fest if you are not mindful of your portions. You might also want to consider the fat content in each dish, which may run quite high in some of the dishes like a whopping 19 to 20 grams of fat for some of the flatbreads. Try selecting one appetizer and two entrées for a party of two or better yet, going with friends allows you to sample various things without having to think about “that last one on the plate.”
Seasons 52 can be a wonderful experience, be sure to review their seasonal dinner menu online here and you will be on your way to their entire flavor without the guilt. "In a world where meat is no longer meat, it’s good to know what you are putting on your table." - Sarah Cherres
