Seamonster: 'Baldessari' (2012)

I first heard of Seamonster around four years ago- when they released "The Ascension of Archibald Balloonhead". Their sound was like a cosmic indie / psychedelic folk kind of thing, and reminded me heavily of Neutral Milk Hotel.

The sound of "Baldessari" is much more electronic in nature, and has quite a different sound than albums past. Pulsing electronic beats and tones lead a lot of the tracks, weird little heavily effect sounds chirp in the background, and the backbones of songs seem carefully scripted and clean.

All that's not to say the record is completely lack of organic instruments, marimba seems often present. Songs like "Parasol" feature an accordion as the main instrument. The track "Dancers" sounds very natural and raw despite some electronic instruments.

I personally liked Seamonster's sound a little better before they took it in this eclectic glitch pop direction, but "Baldessari" is still a solid and enjoyable statement by itself.

"Baldessari" by Seamonster is available via their Bandcamp page.
