Hop into Scribblenauts Unmasked and if you aren't a huge fan of the DC universe, you will be a little lost. But at it's core Unmasked is the same puzzles and adventure we've come to know and love. There will be a period of adjustment for both camps of fans as things can get pretty complicated
As with the original installment, you play as Maxwell, a young lad who has extraordinary powers due to his notebook which lets him create anything that he writes in it. Accompanying him is his sister Lily, who carries a magic globe that allows her to teleport to anywhere she wants. These two powers combined land them in Gotham City with the likes of Batman, Superman, and more DC superheroes than you can fathom.
The puzzles place emphasis on figuring out what the NPC character wants/needs and then utilizing Maxwell's notebook to spawn the correct object or add the right adjectives. Combine this with a seemingly limitless library of DC lore to draw from and you've got yourself a mighty fine adventure through a swath of locales.
Unique to Unmasked is the reputation points system. Rather than getting pieces of Starites - the items which power Lily's globe - you earn reputation points for one of the three factions: Gotham, Metropolis, and Justice League. Each is required to unlock further locations in their respective "universes."
This means that most of the focus is put onto the story missions, as it should be, because each puts the starlight on the superheroes you've come to know and love and the interactions between them. It can be quite hilarious at times with Superman defeating Lex Luthor with nothing other than Kryptonite itself.
If solving puzzles isn't difficult enough for you, occasionally the magical imp Mr. Mxyzptlk will make an appearance and limit your abilities for length of your stay in that level. Finding yourself unable to spawn any type of weaponry, having to deal with all enemies through adding adjectives, was a blast and something that all fans of the series should be able to appreciate.
Now more than ever 5th Cell looks to keep you engaged, challenged, and coming back for more. And with a huge library of DC characters, which will keep even the most avid fans of the universe guessing, Scribblenauts hits a high point.
Batman, Superman, and the Joker walk into a bar. What could go wrong? It's pretty much up to you.
