Scott Stapp, frontman for Creed, is currently touring on his recent solo album, "Proof of Life." The tour is currently trekking toward the Northeast and stopped at Chicago's House of Blues on March 26 for an intimate set that nearly clocked in at two hours.
Like a Storm are providing direct support for the tour, they also opened Creed's 2012 "reunion" tour. Opening with the howl of a didgeridoo, the New Zealand rockers quickly showed their roots. They performed a mix of original material, including recent single "Love the Way You Hate Me," with a handful of playful covers. Their highlight might have been a combination drum and didgeridoo solo that segued into Coolio's "Gansta's Paradise."
Fans began to chant for Stapp shortly before lights dimmed at 10 p.m. He took the stage with his touring band and quickly jumped into "Slow Suicide," the lead-track from his new solo album--his first in eight years. His show featured a nice mix of Creed hits that were interspersed within his new material. Stapp's solo efforts blended seamlessly with the Creed tunes.
Stapp's voice was strong and clean, and he constantly smiled throughout the night. He also frequently interacted with the crowd via hand slaps and dialogue between songs. After performing "One Last Breath" Stapp prefaced "Only One" with the comment, "This song is the answer to the last one."
He also put 100% of himself into the set and was sweat-soaked by the end of the first song. Stapp's emotions were conveyed on every note as he ripped through most of "Proof of Life." The lone song from his 2005 "The Great Divide" as limited to "Justify." Diehard fans sang along throughout the night, whether it was newer material or Creed's "With Arms Wide Open," "Higher" and "My Sacrifice."
With Creed's future uncertain and other members actively touring with Alter Bridge, fans should make an effort to catch this show. They won't be disappointed.
