UK rock giants Biffy Clyro returned to Chicago for a packed house of thirsty fans and newbies.
Armed with a "swiss army knife" of 18 years of material, the band took the audience at Bottom Lounge through a journey of old and new songs that ranged from timeless, eloquent and graceful ballads full of passion, to captivating soaring anthems ---- to powerful, explosive, face-melting rock and roll.
It's no joke when their hard core fans talk about their shows as a religious experience. Their music carries a sophistication that when you peel away the depth of the lyrical song writing, there is a well thought out melodic dynamic to match. Their tracks boast of a symmetry of textures and tension that borders on spontaneous combustion at times. Intoxicating, captivating, and infectious.
Songs from their newest album, "Opposites", bring the same heavy flavor of past albums, along with a biting ferociousness that won't be denied.. The album, when taken apart in it's deluxe version, is certainly a juxtapose of pain and disappointment versus hope and belief. It's hard to listen to these tracks without hearing the strains of the struggles, the highs and lows of recent years with personal struggles immortalized in those songs.
With their continued success in the UK and emerging fan base in the US, Biffy Clyro's conquest of the US is ripe for the taking, should they conspire to press on and broaden their undeniable and compelling success.
Carpe diem boys!
