“Cellphones are the new cigarettes.”

“Valibation” is a sleek and darkly humorous science fiction short that forces the audience to reflect on society's obsession with screens, social networking, and the self. Due to nudity, explicit language, and sexual themes, this film should be only be viewed by adults.

Writer and director Todd Strauss-Schulson crafts a masterful story in which each detail is significant. Cinematographer Elie Smolkin employs fast-paced camera work and swooping angles that command the audience's attention. “At a hefty 20 minutes, this is a short that breezes by—even the most ADHD riddled teen won’t be able to stop watching,” wrote Ivan Kander from Short of the Week.

The film effortlessly blends elements of horror and humor, effectively driving home a point that most are acutely aware of: Social media has ironically offered its users a way to externally validate themselves without any real social interaction.
