Music artists may not have a lot of trust in labels and rightly so. Writers like me on the other hand learn which labels we can count on for good stuff. What I have come to expect from Small Stone is music that is heavy on the guitar and rocks really hard.
Enter Dwellers with the EP Good Morning Harakiri (Small Stone Records, 2012). (The EP label is a little deceiving, by the way. It's only six songs but a little more than 40 minutes.) This definitely is guitar-heavy. It is perhaps a little more on the lo-fi end than other albums I've received from this label, but it rocks pretty hard. If you want a good example of the hard-rocking component of this album, listen to the extended instrumental that starts in the middle of "Black Bird." This sounds like rock from the 70s. It has loud guitar, heavy drums, and just a little of the blues flavor that some of the 70s rock icons were able to weave into their music. Oh, and if you like the instrumental in that one, just check out the instrumental in "Vultures". This reminds me somewhat of the extended jams Clutch mixes into its live shows.
The MO for this band is pretty simple. Perform a verse or two with a chorus, then make the song instrumental from the metal to the end. I'm not complaining. These guys know what they're doing with their instruments. If you like guitar-heavy rock that gets your fist pumping, add this EP to your collection.
