Season three of “Scandal” exploded back to TV screens on Oct. 3 and delivers a series of shockers in response to last season’s sizzling cliffhanger.
Things can never be simple when you’re in love with the married President of the United States and there is no question that Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) have scorching hot chemistry and real feelings underneath that are grounded in so much more than lust and power.
Now, Olivia’s been named as Fitz’s mistress and the phrase “things just got a whole lot more complicated” seems like a huge understatement. It turns out Fitz is hiding at least two secrets from Olivia and by the end of the one-hour thrill ride we are left dangling with one gigantic question: What is the unknown skeleton in Fitz’s closet?
Warning: If you haven’t seen the premiere yet, read no farther!
What a shocker and a shame that Olivia is the daughter of one of the biggest black ops monsters on the planet. Joe Morton is superb as Rowan dresses his daughter down and berates and belittles her for sleeping with the president.
Kerry Washington and Joe Morton have an incredible daughter/father dynamic, but not the warm and loving kind. Rowan is cold, cruel and calculating. He wants Olivia to get on a plane and “disappear” from the problem.
Did anyone else cheer as Cyrus begged her not to run and said, “I’m your monster!”?
Talk about monsters! Rowan should be called “Daddy Dearest” (think Joan Crawford’s daughter’s tell-all book “Mommy Dearest”). In fact, we learn Olivia’s mother even warned her about her father.
Good for you, Olivia. Good job for standing up for yourself and getting off that plane! It’s rather eerie, though, when Rowan tells her Jake (Scott) is paying the consequences for disobeying his orders. We’re not sure how far he’ll go with a daughter who is also crossing him. He radiates evil. Shudder, shudder!
When a Lie Becomes the Truth
It’s horrible to watch Olivia try not to crack under the pressure as her clients bail and her team of Gladiators scrambles to help her. She has no choice but to push the Bat Signal by using her ultra-secret code to set up an underground meeting with Fitz to talk strategy.
Surprise, surprise! Mellie (Bellamy Young) is invited to the party and in true scorned-First-Lady fashion, the insults start flying. We cringe with Olivia when Mellie calls her a whore and we cheer when Olivia asks her to stop.
It’s also fantastic when Mellie details Fitz and Olivia’s “affair” and his “cheating” and he responds by saying these weren't signs of him cheating on her; they were signs of his being in love with another woman. Let’s remember Fitz was forced into marrying Mellie. They’ve lived a lie and have a completely miserable marriage. We’re glad he’s standing up to her and trying to stay true to his feelings for Liv, aren't we?
One point, Olitz.
They settle on telling a partial truthL Fitz and Olivia slept together--but only twice. Mellie surprises us again by going to Cyrus (Jeff Perry) behind their backs so they can plot to pin the mistress title on an innocent aide.
Do we care someone else stands falsely accused? Um, that would be no!
So, the almost truth is covered by Mellie’s lie. Fitz wants to set the record straight and then Mellie plays dirty by dropping her shocking trump card: Fitz leaked Olivia’s name. O.M.G.!
Two points Olitz. Fitz only did it so Mellie can't hold the threat over their heads any more.
Another Secret Lurking in the Dark
We’re glad Olivia’s going to bat for the innocent and injured White House aide. And, we've gotta hand it to Cyrus for handling things so “smoothly” with the panic stricken girl. She has every right to feel like her world has imploded, because it has. But at least the heat is off of Olivia and she can regain her dignity.
Meanwhile, Cyrus goes home to find Charlie waiting with a gun next to a drugged James. He has no choice but to accompany him to meet with Rowan, who instructs him his security clearance must be raised to break the seal on a top secret file on something called Operation Remington.
The folder contains information about something that happens with Fitz and Jake while they served together in Iran. As Cyrus reads the file his face grows dark and he exclaims, “My God!”
Uh oh. More dark and twisty trouble for Fitz. Let’s take a look at his current list of transgressions:
- He became president under a rigged election.
- He is having an extra-marital affair.
- He killed a Supreme Court Justice.
And now … now what? What happened over there that would cause Rowan to drop the bomb in Cyrus’s lap? And, why would Cyrus react that way?
We know it's a dark, ugly secret and, as previously reported, Fitz carries around a lot of guilt.
The possibilities are endless. Was a mission botched? Did they torture or kill someone or break military code somehow? Will Jake be a threat to Fitz after he gets out of the hole?
Here’s another great question: Where do Olivia and Fitz go from here?
She allowed him to hug her in a moment of weakness. What will she think if she finds out Fitz leaked her name? Can they ever really have a future? Or, is their love eternally doomed?
