“Scandal” returned on Oct. 24 with mind-bending new episode, “Say Hello to My Little Friend.” In it, Olivia (Kerry Washington) discovers Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) was involved in Operation Remington, along with Jake (Scott Foley) and the man Huck (Guillermo Diaz) killed under Rowan’s orders, Pete.
While the pieces of the puzzle are still fuzzy, two major plot twists evolve: Jake, Olivia and Huck are going to work together in attempt to bring Rowan down. Plus, Fitz is revealed to know about B613 and have some sort of relationship with Rowan.
We don’t know the extent of their ties. But, we do know Olivia’s dad continues to be a very dangerous man. Jake warns her that Rowan will go after anyone, including his own daughter, if she interferes with his plans. We can’t help but share Jake’s concern. Is Olivia about to engage a deadly enemy in helping Jake and Huck in their quest to take her father down?
No One is Safe
Jake wants to stay with Olivia to protect her and she refuses. In fact, she’s very emphatic about the fact that she doesn’t know him, or B613. Hearing Jake talk about Rowan’s horrific physical punishment is heartbreaking. We can’t imagine anyone enduring this kind of torture – and Liv is clearly mortified.
Scott Foley is particularly strong in this scene and we remember why Jake is ultimately a likeable guy. But, Olivia wants him to leave and he’s got no choice but to follow her wishes. He leaves with a plan, though, and we’re pulling for him to succeed.
Stopping a Killer
Huck and Jake face off in a very tense scene as Jake tries to get Huck on board with his plan. Huck is still scarred from his latest “directive” and is skittish about even trying to take down a formidable monster like Rowan.
When Huck discovers Fitz arranged a military funeral for Pete and begins to put all of the pieces together, he realizes Jake is right. They might have a shot at stopping Rowan. However, neither Huck nor Olivia realized Fitz’s connection to Pete or the covert operation.
We still don’t know the operation’s objective or Fitz's involvement. Whatever it is, it’s been kept buried until now and Fitz, Rowan and Cyrus would like to see it stay that way.
A door seems to open between Olivia and Jake. Kerry Washington and Scott Foley are equal parts electric and heart-wrenching in this scene. We can’t deny, Olitz fans, that Olake has undeniable chemistry, too. They even share a passionate kiss – until Fitz calls. He’s distressed and confused and reaches out to her for comfort; only to find she’s got company. So, he ends the call.
We can see Olivia’s love for Fitz all over her face. Has her opinion of him changed, based on the information she reads in the file? Is their relationship even more doomed by her discovery?
True-to-form, the “Scandal” writers leave a detonated bomb at the end of this heart-pounding installment: Fitz knows about B613 and Rowan! We know he has a guilty secret, we still don't know entirely what it is.
Is Fitz a former B613 agent? Did he help create the organization? Did he put Rowan in charge? Or, was he reporting to Rowan while in the Navy? And, are Jake and Olivia going to discover Fitz’s link to Rowan? If so, how will they react and how will that change their plans?
Plus, we still don’t know why Jake was let out of the hole and allowed to live. Scott Foley addresses the issue in an interview with “The Hollywood Reporter” saying, “In later episodes, we'll find out more, but he doesn't know why he's still alive. That fact that he's still alive is a big question.”
Another big question on Gladiator minds is how is all of this is going to affect Fitz and Olivia’s future? Will either one of them even have an individual future, not to mention a future as a couple, in challenging a monster like Rowan?
As usual, we have to wait and see …
“Scandal” airs in Flint on WJRT ABC12 on Thursdays at 10 p.m. EST.
