Sandeez Hamburger Hut serves best burgers around Lake Travis

It’s 6:00 p.m., and dinner is a distant thought. Nothing is defrosted or even close to ready, but hubby is hungry now. Evenings like that we head north from Lakeway on RR 620 to one of our favorite casual eateries for a quick but yummy meal. We pull into Sandeez Hamburger Hut and know we’ll be dabbing fries into catsup in just minutes.

For more than three decades, Sandeez has kept customers from the Austin area coming back to the comfortable, old-fashioned diner for some of the best burgers in the Lake Travis area. Owner Sandy Lairsen knows her customers well—many are regulars, especially the lunchtime crowd.

While burgers with traditional sides like hand-cut French fries or onion rings are always available, the menu has expanded to include offerings like breakfast tacos, chicken-fried steak, taco salad, and grilled chicken breast. Full plates with meat and vegetables are also available.

But it’s the burgers that keep us coming back. Made with fresh ingredients and a homemade touch, Sandeez burgers can be dressed up with cheese, avocados, chili, or other toppings. They come in regular and small (enough for me) and drinks are large with free refills. It’s a come-as-you-are place that serves people from all walks of life.

If you’re really impatient, call in your order or drive through. On site, you can dine on picnic tables outside or sit in a booth or at a table indoors. There’s a television in one corner, but soap operas are not allowed. Drives Sandy crazy, the hand-written sign says. Other than that, feel free to change channels if you’re partial to a particular program or sports event. If you’ve spent a day on the lake or just don’t feel like cooking, Sandeez is the place to go.
