On Thursday September 5, 2013 The Red Rocker Sammy Hagar celebrated 4 Decades of Rock at the Thunder Valley Casino Resort's Outdoor Amphitheater in Lincoln Ca. Also on the bill was Rival Sons from Long Beach Ca.
Hagar covered everything from his Montrose days to his stint with Van Halen and of course the Woboritas. Unfortunately, Hagar did not cover any Chickenfoot, This examiner is guessing it's because Joe Satriani and Chad Smith are off doing other projects and could not make the show.
Sammy Hagar also known as The Red Rocker, is an American rock vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and musician. Hagar came to prominence in the 1970s with the hard rock band Montrose. He afterwards launched a successful solo career, scoring enduring hits with "I Can't Drive 55", "Heavy Metal", "Mas Tequila" and "Three Lock Box" just to name a few. He enjoyed huge commercial success when he replaced David Lee Roth as the lead singer of Van Halen in 1985, but left the band in 1996. He returned to the band for a 2 year reunion from 2003 to 2005. On March 12, 2007, Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen.
This was a very special night of rock & roll featuring members from Montrose, Sammy Hagar-(vocals), Denny Carmassi-(drums), Bill Church-(bass) and a very special guest, Dave Meniketti from Y&T-(guitar) filling in for the late/great Ronnie Montrose.
Members from the Waborita's (Hagar's current band) included, David Lauser-(drums, backing vocals), Vic Johnson-(giutar, backing vocals) and Mona Gnader-(bass, backing vocals) which Hagar introduced as the Queen of Rock.
And of coarse representing Van Halen was Michael Anthony-(bass, backing vocals).
The set lasted just over two hours and went something like this, (from memory)
"Space Station #5", "Rock The Nation", "Rock Candy", "Bad Motor Scooter", "Red", "I Can't Drive 55", "There's Only One Way To Rock", "I'll Fall In Love Again", "Three Lock Box", "Right Now", "Why Can't This Be Love", "Best Of Both Worlds", "When It's Love", "Finish What Ya Started", "Heavy Metal", "Mas Tequila", "Knockdown Dragout" and two encore songs, "Eagles Fly" and "Bad On Fords and Chevrolets".
Every song in the set was high energy, just like every Hagar show.
In this examiner's opinion, Sammy Hagar shows that he is not slowing down any time soon, as a matter of fact, he's releasing a new album in near future called "Sammy Hagar and Friends" due out soon. Hagar said, "I needed to do this album before any more of my friends die".
Starting the night off was Rival Sons.
Rival Sons is an American rock band from Long Beach, California. In 2008 guitarist Scott Holiday, drummer Michael Miley and bassist Robin Everhart formed the band. Miley had heard of singer Jay Buchanan before. They contacted him through MySpace and after a failed attempt, they were able to convince him to join the band. The band quickly signed with Atlantic Records, although they left shortly afterwards.
Being without a label, they digitally self-released their first album "Before The Fire" in 2009. Jack Rivera of Huffington Post declared them the “Rock Band to Watch” in November 2009.
In 2010 Rival Sons made a name for themselves by supporting acts such as AC/DC, Alice Cooper and Kid Rock and by performing a televised show at The Indianapolis 500. The British metal label Earache Records showed interest in the band. Liking the idea of “bending the rules” by signing to a traditionally death metal label, they signed with them in Autumn 2010.
These guys really put on a great set, they reminded this examiner of an early form of The Black Crowes. They got about 45 minutes to show their stuff. (sorry no set list)
After their set at Thunder Valley they headed out to perform another set a Hagars night club "Sammy's Rockin' Island Bar and Grill" in Roseville Ca.
A great time was had by all.
The Thunder Valley Casino Resort is a great place to see a show. As the Summer Concert Series is coming to an end, there are still some great shows left to see this Summer. To see who's still to come, (click here)
