Mirabi Films presents Salaam Bombay. "A ticket to the nearest big city" "Pay up!" He is told to come back a movie star - the old painted train takes him to his destiny as a teaboy in Bombay.Ten year old Khrishna is kicked out of his house by his mother when he ruins a bicycle his mother has purchased for him. He must go to the big city and earn 500 rupees to pay for his damage. Once in Bombay he joins the rank of the city's homeless child population. The movie wonderfully personalizes the problem of child homelessness in India. The hopelessness of homelessness is seen firsthand - a view most tourists do not ever experience from the comfort of their convenient bliss of taxi cab chaperone's and nice hotel suites.

The story, by Mira Nair (of Monsoon Wedding) is a production worthy of rental. Monsoon Wedding is an excellent movie, as well [With a very different story] almost akin to an Indian fairytale. I watched this movie last November and enjoyed the sweet tale of two Indian lovers preparing for their wedding. The daily social life situations explained some of the cultural norms of India. People in India have a flair for floral growing and arrangements. Fascinated by this, I enjoyed their love for flowers and the simple things of life and the beautiful relationships some of the Indian population enjoy with eachother. In contrast, Khrisna's opposition of living in a society filled with people and noisy overpopulation portray other negative truths about how the country of India accommodate squalor and mistreatment of women and children and other human beings at times - just as every country in society today faces a similar dilemna in every walk of life, whether they wish to address it or not.

However Mira Nair, who had attended Harvard College in the past displays excellent use of the portrayal of truth about the life of homeless children in India. Her fiction movie is specific in the slice-of-life category and her past experience with producing documentaries obviously add to her credentials here. Sandi Sissel shot the film under non-conducive conditions on-location in Bombay. Krishna is played by Shafiq syed and Hansa Vithal is the little girl who befriended him. Her mother, a prostitute is Aneeta Kanwar and Nana Patekar plays her pimp. One of the first people Krishna meets when he gets into town is Raghubir Yadav, a drug addict. Honorable mention is given to Mitch Epstein for production design and Editor Barry Brown. Talvin Singh ha A.r. Rahman is talented with producing a related theme song named The Mumbai Theme Song and some of the related musical production themes, while lauded in theater productions by broadway aficionados- make a statement that contrast from the rank child poverty introduced in Salaam Bombay.
