Safe House plays it too safe

I've already forgotten this film and it has only been a few hours since it ended. This is not a good sign. Actually, this is not a good film.

Sure, this movie has action. Lots of it. Sure, this movie even has a good cast. Denzel Washington, people! What this movie doesn't have is a good script.

Sure, the script makes sense, but maybe it just makes too much sense. It's just so obvious and familiar and Dull. The capital D is intentional. Actually, it's essential. Which, by the way, this movie isn't.

This is the definition of the forgettable, non essential, movie. Everything happens, you nod your head, but there is never a smile or a laugh or a tear. Everything just is. Then the movie ends and there is no applause nor even a cry of "what was that?". The movie instead just ends and everyone nods their heads and leaves quitely and quickly. Actually, some people leave a couple minutes early because why not? The ending of the movie is inevitable anyway. No one will be caught by surprise here.

So anyway, what is this film about? Well, it's a thriller about a man who is supposed to keep another man safe until they get attacked and oh forget it. There's nothing thrilling about this movie. It's just a series of bland chases and gunfights thinly disguised behind Denzel Washington's charming smile. He, and you, can do better than this.
