The Monarch rooftop lounge is nestled in the heart of downtown Manhattan. Located on a 5,000 square feet space on the 18th floor at 71 West 35th Street, the views and feel really compliment a lot of different moods. Great for after work, business meetings, and a first or second date and more. Ric Addison and Stephen Daly are both nightlife pros that have been in the business for over 15 years and are the owners of the Monarch rooftop lounge.
The Scandinavian-chic décor, designed by Natalia Todorova of Gwathmey, Seigal, Kaufman Architects, features an indoor lounge that radiates glamor and allures with seductive appeal, seamlessly connecting to the exterior oasis with sliding floor to ceiling glass doors. Vintage bricks, white painted hand washed wood panels on the walls, teak and grey custom Terrazzo tiles, and raw iron columns evoke a feeling of a Scandinavian summer home with accents of Manhattan elegance. Black pendants designed by Tom Dixon cast gold shadows on the natural tree form bar counter top and glass lighting fixtures project down to reflect on the modern wood walls. The modern, yet unimposing deep-seated upholstered sofas invite guests to relax and bask in the views of Midtown Manhattan, with floor to ceiling silk curtains that frame the picturesque view of the iconic Empire State Building.
At the preview night for the lounge, I tried some of the cocktails and appetizers, which were delicious. The average price for the appetizers is $16, now the drinks were okay. I had ‘The Monarch” (Silver Rum, Fresh Pink Grapefruit Juice, Lavender Bitters, and St. Germain. Garnished with a Purple Orchid) and ‘Duskywing Collins’ (Bourbon, Blackberries, Creme de Mure, Fresh Lemon Juice. Topped with soda and garnished with Basil and Blackberry), both drinks were decent but not enough to keep you wanting more. The food is better than the drinks at this point, but the atmosphere, service and décor make up for the lack of great drinks. Overall I give The Monarch a 3 ½ out of 5.
