Will Ferrell has played many characters throughout his film career, as well as on his years at Saturday Night Live. But his best and most popular character is that of Ron Burgundy. That’s why there was such a high demand for him to reprise the role a whole 9 years after the original film was released. And the good news is that after such a long wait, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is funnier than the first one.

The movies starts with Ron losing his job at the local news station he’s always worked at when he’s fired by the boss played by Harrison Ford (who seems just as unaware and out of touch as he is in real life now). But luckily for Ron, there’s a new 24-hour cable news network starting that wants to recruit him. Naturally, he gathers his old team and they take on this new venture. Much of the humor in the film comes from Ron trying to adapt to the new way of things. The biggest change is that they must come up with much more news for a non-stop news network like this. I thought that since this movie takes place in 1980, there would be jokes about Ron and his team struggling to adapt the 80’s. But they really don’t go that route; setting it in 1980 doesn’t allow for much change anyway since the decade is just beginning. Instead, it’s more about Ron being Ron and doing things his own way as absurd as it might be to others.

What always made this character appealing is that he’s so confident yet so clueless. He thinks he‘s always right but not necessarily because he’s arrogant… just stupid. I never cared much for Steve Carell’s character Brick Tamland though. In the first film, I just couldn’t get past how preposterously dumb he was. No human being could be as dumb as he was. In the sequel, he’s still just as dumb but they have more fun with his character and give him some personality by adding a love interest. The first film in general was a bit overrated in my opinion. Ron Burgundy was a good character with funny lines here in there but the story could’ve been better. Anchorman 2 is an improvement which had me laughing more often this time around.
