The Lowell Memorial Auditorium came alive last night as Volbeat, HIM and All That Remains stopped in town on the final weekend of the Rock Allegiance Tour 2013 (Airbourne was also on the tour but had to leave early due to a 'family emergency' as stated on the band's official Facebook page.) The show was originally going to be held at the Tsongas Center, just a few blocks down the road where most of the bigger name shows are held. A week before the show the venue changed was announced, presumably because of low tickets sales. That didn't hinder the show from being great though.
All That Remains took the stage first, their set starting just before 7 PM. The auditorium was not even close to being full yet and it was likely the smallest crowd the band has played to in a while. Being the only American band on the bill could have had a part in it. Still they played as if they were in a sold-out arena and the fans that were there enjoyed themselves. The set list mixed old favorites like Some Of The People, All Of The Time, Two Weeks, Forever In Your Hands and This Calling with newer material like Down Through the Ages and Stand Up.
As the set changed over for HIM it seemed like the venue started to fill in and a decent looking sized 'pit' took shape in front of the stage, which included more female fans than before. Not surprising though, given front man Ville Valo's charismatic yet mysterious stage presence and soulful voice. The set was a lengthy sixteen songs which spanned material from all albums, from Your Sweet Six Six Six to Killing Loneliness and brand new single Into the Night. Click here for a complete set list.
Headlining the evening was Volbeat, and they brought plenty of energy and rock and roll to share with the crowd, which had grown again significantly during the break. From beginning to end, the fun never stopped and the band seemed to be enjoying themselves just as much as the audience did. They even brought all the kids up on stage for the last song of the night. The set was fifteen songs plus a three song encore and included their hits as well as covers of Young the Giant and Dusty Springfield, and in between there were snippets of Judas Priest and Slayer strummed to keep the audience on their toes.
