It's sad when the first thing one thinks while taking in a new Robin Thicke single is, ‘I sure hope Miley Cyrus doesn’t end up twerking to this music.” Sadly, though, Thicke’s prior single, “Blurred Lines,” perfectly described Cyrus’ state of being at the time – a former good girl going really bad.
With “Give It 2 U,” Thicke once again resorts to a funky, falsetto vocal and this time is rap-assisted by hot new hip-hopper, Kendrick Lamar. The track is built around an elastic, rather druggy sounding keyboard line that sounds like something you might hear at an electronic dance music concert – or how they used to say it back in the day, a rave.
When it comes to this song’s words, Thicke doesn’t have any particularly deep thoughts to share with us. This is, for lack of a better term, a pick up line song. He likes her, and he just wants to blur the lines between romance and sex, so that what he calls love, actually feels like sex.
This is not poetry in motion. However, the motion containing the non-poetry is nevertheless funky and cool, for whatever that’s worth.
