Rise Against performed a stellar set for their hometown crowd at Chicago's UIC Pavilion on January 27, 2012. Touring on their 2011 release, Endgame, the alternative/punk rockers were welcomed with raised fists and an instant mosh pit as they tore into 'Survivor Guilt'. They gave it their all for over an hour and a half, including a mini four-song acoustic set, before they returned for a lengthy encore.
If frontman and vocalist Tim McIlrath wasn't enough to get the crowd moving (he was) then the talented and acrobatic lead guitarist Zach Blair was certain to get a response. Joe Principe (bass) and Brandon Barnes (drums) laid a solid foundation for McIlrath and Blair to work their charismatic stage presence in the densely packed venue. McIlrath worked the full width of the stage at a frenzied pace, ensuring that the entire crowd was engaged in the show--moshing, crowd-surfing, and vocal particpation were highly encouraged.
'The Good Left Undone', 'Help Is on the Way' and 'Re-Education' were early favorites on the night, though the emphasis was performing tracks from Endgame. They closed out their primary set with 'Prayer of the Refugee' before treating the crowd to acoustic versions of 'Audience of One', 'Swing Life Away', 'Make It Stop' and 'Give It All'.
After a brief respite, Rise Against came back for a lively encore and the crowd responded in kind to 'Midnight Hands'. The fervor was a bit too much for one fan who ironically stopped the set during 'The Strength to Go On' when McIlrath noticed he was in need of medical attention. They closed out the evening with 'Savior' before the roughly 9000 fans exited into the chilled air having received exactly what they were expecting on the night.
