'Ride Along'

What happens when you pair Kevin Hart (‘Grudge Match,’) the current ‘go-to-guy’ for comedy with the tough gangsta persona of Ice Cube (’21 Jump Street?’) The answer is Universal Pictures’ ‘Ride Along,' a motion picture filled with zany situations and laugh out loud humor.

In the film, Ben (Kevin Hart) a fast-talking high school security guard joins his girlfriend Angela’s (Tika Sumpter) decorated brother, James (Ice Cube) a hot-tempered police detective to patrol the streets of Atlanta. He becomes involved in James’ latest case that centers around a notorious crime boss, Omar (Laurence Fishburne). Now, in order to prove that he deserves his future bride, he must survive the most insane 24 hours of his life.

I have to admit, that after watching trailers for the film, I was skeptical about the film's ability to deliver a solid comedy. Well, I am here to say, that I was wrong. ‘Ride Along’ is chock full of witty dialogue juxtaposed against a dangerous action filled backdrop.

But true to form, Kevin Hart delivers an insanely outrageous performance as the fish-out-water Ben, who wants desperately to please his girlfriend’s overprotective brother. His rapid fire wit is volleyed as fast as the bullets that rain down in the film. As you might recall, Hart recently appeared in the highly successful ‘Think Like a Man' literally stole the show.

Ice Cube as the gruff and no nonsense detective rounds out the duo. It is not a surprise that ‘Cube’ who is an accomplished actor, producer, director and recording artist is able to play the straight man to Hart’s rapid fire insanity. And since he is no stranger to comedy, (think ‘Barbershop’) he is able to take a back seat to Hart, and the result is a refreshingly funny film.

Set in the urban streets of Atlanta, Georgia, the film stars Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, John Leguizamo, Bruce McGill, Tika Sumpter, Bryan Callen and Laurence Fishburne. There is never a dull moment in the film, and at times, it is hard to decipher the good guys from the bad.

If you are tired of the winter blues and yearn to liven up your day, you will enjoy the music of Christopher Lenneretz (‘Horrible Bosses,’ ‘Identity Thief’) a composer, producer, conductor and arranger for film, television, video games and records. His energetic beats ramp up the action played out on screen.

‘Ride Along’ is a proverbial buddy comedy with an amusing twist that takes you on the ride of a lifetime on the highway of box office gold. It is full of surprises and will have you wanting more. Do not fear. There is a ‘Ride along 2’ in the works.

In theaters nationwide on January 17. Rated PG-13 – Parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13 and may contain violence, nudity, adult language and adult activities. Run Time: 100 minutes.
