On December 3, 2013 Italian metal storytellers Rhapsody of Fire released their tenth album Dark Wings of Steel. This is the first album since the line-up changes that occurred in 2011 with the main change coming in the loss of Luca Turilli as main songwriter and co-composer of the music. This album was written by the singer, Fabio Lione, and composed by the usual co-composer Alex Starpoloi now working with his brother, Manuel. Even though the writing for this album has completely changed, Rhapsody of Fire maintained their symphonic elements and do not miss a beat from their previous work. Missing is the storyline that typically accompanies each album, but that missing link makes sense as Turilli was the mastermind behind all the fantasy epics in their previous albums. Not only displaying the symphonic prowess, songs such as "Tears of Pain" display a crushing heavy tone and the perennial ballad "My Sacrifice" introduces some interesting musical elements both in structure and use of the acoustic guitar backdrop during certain sections of the song. My favorite song on the album, although like every Rhapsody of Fire I enjoy almost all the music, is probably "A Tale of Magic" due to the fist-pumping nature of the music as well as the lyrics hitting home for me. Fans of power metal should definitely check this album out, and if you have not listened to their other work should also be on list to do so as well! Happy listening!
