Who would have thought that a sketch titled “The Family” on the iconic sketch series “The Carol Burnett Show” in 1974 would not only become one of the fan favorites, but also manage to spin-off into a series that would be just as popular? The sketch focused on Thelma Harper played brilliantly by Vicki Lawrence who reprised her role for series in 1983 that ran for six seasons. Now StarVista Entertainment and Time Life have dipped into their vault to bring the hit classic series Mama’s Family to DVD in an all-new DVD set featuring all 130 episodes of the beloved series.
The show follows the escapades of the Harper clan, headed by formidable matriarch, Mama Harper, a fiery-tempered no-nonsense woman who does not suffer fools gladly. In fact, she makes everybody suffer a little with her patented snappy retorts that truly put the "diss" in dysfunction. Mama’s Family was one of those old school sitcoms that would probably not work today, but thanks to a strong cast and some great writing managed to capture an audience. The show played more like a stage production than a normal series, much like a lot of the shows of that time and still works today. Prior to the regular series they did a made for TV 90 minute special titled Eunice focusing on Carol Burnette’s character and while it does deliver the comedy, it is surprisingly more emotional than you might expect and adds a different level to the show and how it might have begun and ended if it never was re-developed as a series. The thing that made this show connect with audiences was while it took on subjects with comedy it did it with a family of characters that we all could relate too. Vicki Lawrence brought that character to life like no one could and even despite the lack of old makeup somehow still convinced you that she was in fact Mama and whether she likes it or not always will be. The series pretty much drops the concept of the original Eunice film and creates an alternate version featuring the same characters that plays a lot better and more entertaining. There are not many shows that are able to hold up after so many years, but Mama’s Family is still just as funny and entertaining now as it was when it originally aired. These latest DVDs don’t sport the best quality transfer due to the age of the films, but still looks great. Whether you are an old school fan or have never checked out this classic series this is the perfect set and delivers everything you need to join the family.
This all-new collectors set includes all 130 episodes on 24 DVDs. The first two seasons feature the rare, original broadcast masters of the episodes which fans have clamored about for years and also feature Harvey Korman's hilarious introductions as Alistair Quince (spoofing Alistair Cooke). This set also contains over ten hours of specially-created programming including: a cast reunion roundtable with Vicki Lawrence (Mama), Ken Berry (Vint), Dorothy Lyman (Naomi), Beverly Archer (Iola), and Allan Kayser (Bubba), all-new cast and crew interviews, including the aforementioned cast, Betty White, executive producer Rick Hawkins, costumers Ret Turner and Bob Mackie and others, a very special one-on-one interview with Vicki "interviewing" Mama through the magic of split-screen; an exclusive new Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence interview, the 1982 CBS-TV movie "Eunice", an introductory note penned by Lawrence, key "Family" sketches from THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW and so much more.
