Listen to your teacher. Repeat after me.
I won't grow up, I don't want to go to school.
Just to learn to be a parrot, and recite a silly rule.
It would be beneath my dignity to climb a tree,
I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up,
Not me! Not I! Not me!
How long has it been since you've heard the Peter Pan “I Won't Grow Up” song? Just as long as it's been since you saw a fairy, right? See, you went and grew up, in spite of all your spit swears and pinky promises to the contrary.
If you truly want to recapture that childhood, and drag a few more grownups and kids, with you to Neverland, now is definitely your chance to be a child again. Possibly the most incredible musical production ever, Peter Pan, starring Cathy Rigby is being performed right here in Nashville, at Tennessee Performing Center (TPAC). Only being presented again this weekend, March 2 and March 3, I'd head on over to tpac.org right now to book my tickets, if I were you – then come back over here to finish this article.
Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby is a magical, memorable performance that neither you nor your child will want to miss. Not unless you really DO want to grow up and who wants to do that? It's a flighty production in all the right ways, with Peter Pan sprinkling beautiful, glittering fairy dust as she flies, floats, spins, soars, pivots and pliés her way from one corner of the stage to the other, along with Tinker Bell, whose light is be-bopping to and fro, bells atinklin' as she accompanies and protects her beloved Peter Pan.
It's an incredibly tight cast performance, with nary a word nor inflection misspoken, nor a jig mis-jigged. There's bound to be something you will love in each scene, with nearly every genre of entertainment being represented in this one play, including ballet, gymnastics, tango, rhythm and song being performed during every kind of scene imaginable including fight, fantasy, comedy, crime, emotional, enchanting and endearing scenes.
Cathy Rigby is Peter Pan personified, without doubt. She has that little boy false bravado and swagger, the 'I don't care' posturing, misplaced pride, childlike innocence, youthful vulnerability and “out of the mouths of babes” attitudes down to a science, along with the sideways smirk, cocky grin, infectious chuckle and that “I'm tougher than I look” stance of a not-so-tough little guy who hasn't had an easy life.
The two time Emmy Award winning and two time Tony Award nominated Peter Pan starring Cathy Rigby still resonates loudly and clearly with today's sophisticated audience, keeping the story to its true form, instead of trying to reinvent it to a new age; often the death of a production.
The smiles are rampant, applause deafening, laughter generous and tears flowing during this never-ending story of being a kid in Neverland, being brave and strong and loved, loyal and kind and good. Don't miss your chance to see Cathy Rigby in Peter Pan. Showing now at TPAC.
