The South side of Forney has a new donut business, but as customers are discovering, it’s no ordinary donut shop. The Hole Thing Donuts and Treats, located at 571 S. FM 548 Ste. 128, near Forney High School, opened for business on December 9, 2011. Though they offer the traditional donuts, The Hole Thing is really a gourmet donut shop without the gourmet prices.
The new business is a welcome addition to the new shopping strip on the S/W corner of FM 548 and FM 741. Lazy J Coffee and The Hole Thing Donuts are working together in the shopping center by selling each other’s wares, rather than competing for the same customers. Hole Thing Donuts is owned by local resident Katie Vrana, her sister, Stephanie Winther, who moved her family from Las Vegas to do this with her and Katie's niece, Jennifer Thrash from Crandall, "who took her love for donuts to a new level by opening a shop in Forney". She hired the culinary talents of Scott Martin to come up with new flavors for donuts, such as the Captain Crunch Peanut Butter Bar, S’mores donut, the Sweet and Salty, and a surprisingly tasty Maple Bacon Bar. They also have fruit filled and cream filled donuts, and one of their most popular menu items is the sausage roll.
One of my favorites was the blueberry donut. It was the best blueberry donut I’ve ever tasted, and it was also a favorite of my friends. If you or your children are candy lovers, you may want to try the M &M’s bar or the Snickers bar. Both tastes like a light, fluffy cake with our favorite candies generously layered on top. In fact, all of the specialty donuts seem to have an almost cake like quality that is different than regular donuts. Different, but really, really good.
Their traditional donuts such as the plain or glazed are priced at around 70 cents apiece. The specialty donuts are in the $1.25 range. If you buy a dozen donuts, they take 10% off the cost. I ordered two regular donuts and 10 of the specialty donuts, and after the discount it cost less than $13.00. The prices are very fair considering the quality of donuts The Hole Thing produces. They also offer Lazy J coffee at the shop and inside seating is available.
Owner Katie Vrana said, “We’ll keep coming up with new donut flavors”, and she is looking for her customers input as to what interesting flavors and concoctions they would like to taste. Stop by The Hole Thing Donut and Treats and welcome the business to Forney, and let me know what your favorite donut is at the new establishment.
