Outstanding book on Sufism

Having read many books on Sufism over the years, I have seen books ranging from the theoretically abstruse to the ritualistic to the emotionally woo-woo. Alas, it seems sometimes that books on Sufism have become Rorschach cards that often reveal the projections of a given writer rather than the essence of Sufism itself. Indeed, this very point has been made by teachers since Rumi's time to the current day.
This is a very different book. Through a parable form the author shows how the Sufi teacher works with the student through direct and indirect means. Further, he describes the basic teachings of Sufism in a simple yet not simplistic fashion. Although I approached the book somewhat skeptically, knowing it was written in the form of a parable, I came away at the end feeling this is one of the best books I've ever read on Sufism. It truly has an impact on the reader, thus exhibiting what a great Sufi teaching should do. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Sufism or in any spiritual path. Why? Because he is not just describing Sufism; he is describing a universal pattern that guides all seekers.
