For the character, it was 19 years in the making, but CSI: Crime Scene Investigation finally said goodbye to Catherine Willows, played by Marg Helgenberger in the Season 12 episode entitled ‘Willows in the Wind’.
Personally, the episode, which is a continuation of last week’s ‘Miss Willows Regrets’, where baddie Titus Welliver begins to seemingly hunt down Catherine with the FBI being involved too, ultimately as the case of the week itself is pretty bad-ass. Heck, Catherine gets shot, making you question if she’ll make it to the end of the episode even.
But ultimately, for as amazing as the case itself being worked by the entire CSI lab, the goodbye itself is a bit of a fizzle/dud. If anything, when you say goodbye to a character like Catherine was on CSI, I wanted to be in tears by the end of the episode. As someone who loved CSI since the beginning, I was a big fan of the show and the characters. So to see one more of the original team say bye is more than a bit of a part of me that first loved the show saying goodbye too. With something like this, they came oh so close of getting the results but then in it’s final moments just fizzled out. The final moments of the show, featuring Willows in a diner in vegas with Morgan Brody was a bit disappointing. No moment with Grissom? Or Nick? Or anyone else? Or maybe her somewhere else than Vegas… something!??!!
I know Grissom is not in Vegas, but not a phone call or meeting her in Washington for- well, hell, anything? I just wanted a nice ending. After a touching goodbye between her and all her team-mates saying she really was leaving, and for an episode that had a great bit/deal of suspense only to fizzle out in the final moments as a goodbye to viewers, it was more than a heart breaking for me as a fan of the series, and just wanted something more deserving of the character as a goodbye. While she wasn’t killed off, and I was grateful for that, just having a little convo to CSI Brody and then just cutting to black as she sits in a diner alone was, well, simply put: it was boring; It lacked any real heart. And while the words she said to Brody might have meant to inspire something, a life lesson she is passing on to Brody, it instead seemed trite and un-needed. Heck, I still think even if it wasn’t Brody but someone like Nick or Greg in the same spot, I don’t think I would have been happy, because it just felt cheap for a goodbye.
Overall, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation said goodbye to Catherine Willows with one hell of a case of the week, say goodbye to her night shift team with one hell of a goodbye, only to fizzle out in the final moments of the show before cutting to black, thus, ruining the goodbye to us, the viewers. For what has been a surprisingly good return to form this year for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation one can only hope that this doesn’t bring back a trend of the series dropping in quality.
