Red River Rye Whiskey

Editor's Note: This article is dedicated to Lance Bridges and Leo Medrano with whom I had the pleasure of sharing this particular bottle.

Today we'll be reviewing a new Texas whiskey straight from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Red River Rye. Red River are yet another entrant into the burgeoning craft spirits movement in Texas and have become increasingly easy to find on the shelves of the local spirits emporiums here in Houston. Red River is one of many products produced under the JEM Beverage Company umbrella. There's isn't a ton of information regarding the company or their products online, but that's also probably due to the fact that they are a very small operation focusing on the craft at present.

The nose of this whiskey is wonderful. Of course you get that it is rye as you usually do when drinking this style. But the notes of toasted banana, chocolate, berries, oak, and clove fill the senses directly afterwards. Some wild but faint boozy notes were detected as well, perhaps due to a shorter aging cycle than more established brands. Despite that, overall it does not come off as an inferior or young whiskey at all. In fact, it reminds me of another favorite of mine, Yellow Rose Rye.

The flavor follows suit with the above at first, bringing the notes of its scent back to the palate. From there hints of allspice, cinnamon, tobacco, and anise finish out the sip. This is a fine new contender in the rye whiskey annals and certainly anyone that loves this style should enjoy it as well. We as Texans should be proud to have distillers in our state that are doing the craft proper justice. Pick up a 750 ML bottle at your local area Spec's Wine, Spirits, and Finer Foods for around 28 dollars.
