Trial by combat is about a woman, Emily, in her twenties living alone in an apartment complex. We are told her husband is in the army, which explains why she’s on her own for the time being. Emily has a slight problem though. Small items are constantly disappearing from her home. At first it doesn’t really bother her, but then she decides to take action. She already suspects someone of the crime and one day, on her way home, she sees the culprit leaving her apartment. Emily confronts the culprit shortly after only to be a little shocked by the circumstances.
I quite enjoyed this story. It was much better than The Daemon Lover as it wasn’t built up to be less than it really was. The ending made me stop and think for a minute before dismissing it for some mere coincidence.
