The Tonawanda Restaurant Examiner and companion discovered the Taste of India location in Amherst, NY about 15 years ago. The service and food are impeccable, the waitstaff friendly and helpful, though there can be a bit of a language barrier with some servers, but be patient, the food is worth it. After 15 years, it's still our favorite Indian restaurant in Western New York.

At Taste of India, we offer the most authentic Indian dishes which have evolved over centuries to perfection. Each dish is prepared with a variety of spices and ingredients to create a distinct and individual flavor. For centuries, some of these spices have been prescribed for their health imparting qualities and ancient healing properties. Our fresh ingredients are skillfully cooked to preserve a low fat, high nutritional value, and prepared for your taste, from mild to medium, to hot. All entrees are also served with authentic Basmati rice.

Start your Indian experience off with a lassi ($2.95), a traditional sweet, light yogurt drink. You can also choose a fig, strawberry or mango lassi ($3.50).

All dishes are of excellent quality, but this Examiner and companion often find that we enjoy ordering off the appetizer menu and making a meal of:
Lamb or Beef Samosa ($3.95) homemade pastries stuffed with lean ground beef or lamb and peas
Gobi Pakora ($2.95) cauliflower fritters dipped in chickpea batter and deep fried
Paneer Pakora ($3.95) homemade cheese dipped in chickpea batter and deep fried
Chicken Tikka ($7.95) boneless and skinless chicken marinated in yogurt and mild spices and cooked on a skewer in a tandoori oven

You can't go to Taste of India and not try the specialty breads. They are all excellent, you can't go wrong. Some of our favorites include:

Naan ($1.95), Garlic Naan ($2.95), Saag Naan ($3.25) and Keema Naan ($3.95). Naan is a tandoori baked white flour bread. Garlic Naan has fresh garlic added, Saag Naan is stuffed with seasoned spinach, and Keema Naan is stuffed with ground lamb.

Other breads of note:
Onion Kulcha ($3.25) tandoori baked bread stuffed with fresh mushrooms
Shahi Kulcha ($3.25) white flour bread stuffed with delicately spiced homemade cheese

We also order several accompaniments with our appetizers and specialty breads:

Papadam ($1.50) crispy lentil wafers
Mango Chutney ($1.95) sweet-spicy mango relish. This is nothing short of magnificent. You won't find this in jar in a specialty store. Order two, you won't want to share.
Raita ($3.25) homemade yogurt with cucumbers and tomatoes. Made fresh daily, this is the perfect accompaniment to cool down your mouth between spicy dishes.

If you're feeling adventurous when choosing an entree, try some of the amazing lamb dishes on the Taste of India menu. This Examiner highly recommends:
Lamb Palak ($12.95) boneless lamb prepared with curried spinach
Keema Matar ($11.95) ground lamb cooked with green peas and curry sauce
Rogan Josh ($11.95) lean cubed lamb served in a yogurt based sauce
Lamb Makhani ($12.95) boneless lamb prepared in butter and cream sauce and garnished with raisins and cashews.
The Lamb Makhani is simply perfection. The companion, who is not a fan of lamb, decided this dish was his second favorite entree, his favorite being the Beef Biryani ($12.95), Jasmine rice flavored with cubes of lean beef, broccoli saffron and ganished with cashews and raisins.

If you are seeking vegan or vegetarian options, Taste of India is one of the best places in Buffalo to find them. Every single vegan or vegetarian option on their menu is delicious, try them one by one over time. Need a starting point? Some of our favorite dishes are:

Chana Masala ($9.95) chickpeas cooked in a special house tomato sauce
Matar Paneer ($10.95) homemade cheese and peas in a flavorful curry tomato sauce
Chana Saag ($10.95) curried spinach with chickpeas in a spicy tomato sauce
Saag Paneer ($10.95) homemade cheese cooked with curried spinach in tomato sauce
Baingan Bhartha ($10.95) mashed baked eggplant seasoned with spices and sauteed with onions and tomatoes
Vegetable Vindaloo (10.95) an assortment of fresh vegetables sauteed in a tomato-based tangy hot sauce
Tofu Matar ($10.95) tofu with peas, tomatoes and onions in a special curry sauce
Tofu Amrati ($10.95) tofu prepared with yogurt, ginger, garlic and chickpea flour

Leave room for dessert, because everything on the menu is delicious.
Kheer ($3.50) a creamy rice pudding garnished with pistachios and raisins
Rasmalai ($3.50) homemade light cheese in a delicately sweet milk sauce
Gulab Jamun ($2.95) deep fried milk balls in a sweet syrup
Kulfee ($2.95) homemade Indian ice cream in your choice of flavors: plain, mango and pistachio (go for the mango and pistachio).
