Sushi Nagasaki is an unassuming restaurant with seating for up to 50 people, set in a strip mall in Kenmore, not far from the Buffalo border. Don't let that fool you, Sushi Nagasaki has the best sushi an sashimi in the Northtowns, in this Examiner's opinion.
Every afternoon and evening you'll find the owner rolling sushi to order, and you may even find her waiting tables. Dao Phommachanh is a tiny lady, the mother of four. She always has a smile, and dining on her Thai creations is not only a pleasure, but a treat. Everything at Sushi Nagasaki is made-to-order, which means you'll have a little wait time. Order some sushi, a shrimp summer roll, sit back and relax. Heck, order lots of sushi. It's that good.
The Tonawanda Restaurant Examiner and companions (we were joined by our 17-year-old and 21-year-old sons for a recent visit) began our meal with several offerings from the sushi portion of the menu and decided to share the Vegetable Tempura ($5.95), which is not to be missed. Lightly battered and quickly deep fried, the vegetable assortment of broccoli, mushrooms, asparagus, sweet potatoes and onions was delicious. Not at all greasy like vegetable tempura at some restaurants, this Examiner's 17-year-old son could have eaten an entire plate by himself.
All sushi on this menu is of the freshest, highest most delectable quality. There isn't a bad option on the menu. Hand rolled to order, served with wasabi and pickled ginger, order several, share them and enjoy. Each roll is between 6 and 9 pieces.
Classic Rolls ($5.95 each)
AAC: avocado, asparagus and cucumber. Quite possibly this Examiner's favorite, definitely a favorite of our 17-year-old and 21-year old.
Shrimp Tempura: crispy shrimp tempura and cucumber. This one is always a hit with this Examiner's constant companion/husband.
Spicy Tuna: spicy tuna and avocado. We always have to get two orders of this one when we go to Sushi Nagasaki. This one goes fast and is enjoyed by all.
Specialty Rolls:
Orange Roll ($8.95): California roll topped with orange fish roe. This one is amazing. The roe are itty bitty and they pop in your mouth as you eat it. Try it once, you'll be hooked.
Lady in Red ($8.95): California roll topped with red fish roe. Another amazing sushi roll. This one disappears so quickly, this Examiner is lucky to get one piece. Order two, you won't be sorry.
Rainbow Roll ($9.95): California roll wrapped around tuna, salmon and shrimp. Simply amazing.
Fire Dragon ($9.95): Spicy tuna roll with fish roe in soy wrap. This is probably the best roll on the menu. If we could give it more than 5-stars, we would.
Tuna and Salmon Love ($9.95): Spicy salmon roll with tuna placed on top. Another roll we can't resist.
On the Thai side of the menu, we have tried and loved:
Eggplant basil ($7.95): sauteed eggplant with garlic oil, ginger scallion, chili paste,Thai basil and oyster sauce. Served with rice.
Cashew chicken ($7.95): cashews and chicken mixed with onions, red peppers, green peppers and baby corn. Served with rice.
Pad Tao Yao ($7.95): string beans, tofu, onion, scallion and garlic
This is a welcoming, casual place to enjoy sushi, sashimi and Thai food that is made fresh and to order. Be patient, the food is worth it.
