Gladiator Robot Mech Builder is a free to play robot combat game developed by Ocean Red LLC. It is a 3D third person shooter that combines a customizable role playing game with the strategy of Mech-Warrior combat.
This game is a tossup of from vs. function. Ratings vary between players from “BEST GAME EVER” to “Don’t waste your time” giving it a 2.5 on the app store. This is largely from the well-conceived concept being undermined by poor follow through.
On the surface this is a great game. It has a lot of replay value. The issue is however that the developer overlooked simple things like splash screens and navigation in favor of their physic engine and graphics.
The play is to create a robot gladiator and begin a never ending death match. There are an infinite number of rounds that become harder as you survive longer. You must purchase power-ups, weapons, and armor to help you survive the rounds.
This game hits many of the high water marks that destroy play for most mobile games. There is a large selection of items to try out; sniper rifles, swords, missile launchers, and shields. You can even change out the armor paint, robot head, and shoulder paldrons.
However the title misses on the key points that make a game appeal to a normal player such as; title screens, settings, and ad management. For instance ads appear over the buttons you need to change between screens. This completely disables the game making the player have to exit, stop the app, and restart.
So Robot Gladiator is fun but the persisting bugs make it hard to keep playing. A continuity problem with the product such as what the exact name of the app is what destroys this game. In the app store this is called Gladiator Robot Mech Builder 3D, the opening slash screen says Robot Gladiator Builder, and the app itself says it is called Mech Gladiator. This is an amateur mistake for branding that carries through the entire game with the architecture.
If the developer would smooth over the rough play, slash screens, and ads then this could be a great game. As it stands it looks like a tech school homework project.
For creative design, cool 3D modeling, and fun replay I give Robot Gladiator Builder 3 out of 5 dancing hamsters.
