Hailing from Massachusetts, young punk band Potty Mouth released their debut full-length Hell Bent on Old Flame Records just a few weeks ago. They’ve been on tour and played for free at New Haven’s BAR four days ago. This quartet believes strongly in D.I.Y. ethics and also happens to be entirely female, but bassist Ally Einbinder thinks that calling them “riot grrrl” for just being girls is lazy. They just consider it important to make girls better known in the still predominantly male punk scene. Abby Weems provides vocals that sound rough and gritty, with her voice sounding subdued but seething with emotion. “How real were you?” she asks a former friend on the crashing single “Damage,” sounding direct enough to make it feel like she’s speaking to the listener as well. “The Spins” is an easy standout with a rocking, heavy sound throughout and a very memorable, smashing chorus, complete with its warning against bad decisions that leave you “lying on the floor.” While it’s nothing revolutionary, Potty Mouth’s Hell Bent is definitely worth checking out for anyone who wants to hear some real punk rock.
