Hailing from Chile, Horrifying were established in 2010. Euphoric Existence (Blood Harvest) is the band’s debut salvo, a three-song EP that introduces the band’s raw and hideous sound. The goal of Horrifying is to recapture and channel the old-school, more cryptic sound of death/thrash metal. Think of raw bands such as Death, Merciless, and Immolation, and you have just a taste of what this three-song EP has in store for you. Check out the band’s demo at bandcamp for some inspiration.
Limited to 300 copes on 7” vinyl, Euphoric Existence kicks off with the short track “An Agonic Death,” a searing guitar note ripping through the ether for a few seconds before the battery and the gurgling vocals bring out some hard-hitting, raw death metal laced with thrash-driven guitars courtesy of Raul Arancibia and Mario Carrasco (also on bass).
The title track pulls back on the guitars a bit to let throat Johan M spit out some blasphemies while drummer Putrid Body rumbles in the jungle. The combination of thrash and death here is the key, with the drums and throat evoking a raw and heavy sound while the guitars hint at facets of melody. The pace here is a bit slower, giving the track a heavy, sardonic quality that works really well.
The EP closes with “Petrifying Hallucinations,” which starts off with some killer distorted guitars sure to send the weak into oblivion. After that bit of noodling, the band busts out some killer death metal, with the rhythm guitar and drums setting off some stellar rhythms while the lead taps into thrash for its essence of power.
Those into old-school death metal peppered with thrash metal will dig the sounds from these greñudos. Euphoric Existence will make for a nice collector’s piece in any hardened metalhead’s collection.
