"King of the Underworld," is a crime film with Kay Francis and Humphrey Bogart. Francis is a doctor who gets mixed up with Bogart, not by choice but because of her husband's misdeeds. Bogart, is a gangster who literally has a Napoleon complex, he's kind of obsessed with him throughout the movie. James Stephenson, is thrown in the mix, his character is a writer and Bogart's character wants him to write his biography.
This one seems to be one of Bogart's low budget ones but nevertheless it's not too bad. Very fast pace, the movie is only like an hour and ten minutes. It's a pretty straightforward movie. Bogart's character is evil but he's kind of funny, he kind of misses the zingers that Francis and Stephenson zing at him during the movie.
It's not his best movie but it's entertaining. The acting isn't bad, Kay Francis is a very cool character, she controls on how to get her life back together and get Gurney. Stephenson is made the romantic lead which works out not too badly. The ending is a little out there, what happens to the men is the best revenge sequence. It seems far fetched but it's fun.
Overall you could call this a Bogart obsessed Napoleon gangster melodrama. It's a 3 out of 5 star picture. Fast pace and gets to the point. For diehard fans of the actors in the movie.
