Decades before Thalli’s birth, the world ended in a nuclear war. But life went on deep underground, thanks to a handful of scientists known as The Ten. Since then, they have genetically engineered humans to be free from emotions in the hopes that war won’t threaten their lives again.*
Thalli, short for Thallium- has a purpose. She does not know exactly what it is but she will soon find out. Author Krista McGee has begun a new dystopian series about a 17 year old girl, designed, and created by the Scientists for music and nothing else. There can be no sickness, no emotion- no love. Everyone is designed for a specific duty. Why? Because earth has been destroyed by nuclear war decades ago and the air may still be toxic so everyone resides underground (presumably) called the State.
Thalli, a musician has friends who are getting “sick” and they are leaving and all she knows is that they may be annihilated due to their illness, but she realizes something else. She feels things. Especially for the handsome scientist Berk. Berk will one day become one of the 10. The 10 are the lead scientists to usher in the new generation of workers, technology and produce materials for studying.
But then people disappear and Berk and Thalli try to uncover the truth: Just what are the Scientists up to?
In the story, we meet an old man named John who survived the nuclear war and offers sage advice to Thalli. He says there is a Designer who is over the Scientists and this Great Designer created even them.
So many stories, so many people Thalli wish she can trust.
But who can she trust?
Quote Bite: “I have a purpose. I laughed at him the first time he said it. But everything has changed now. I believe him. I do have a purpose. I am a child of God. A child of God! And one day I will drink from deathless springs.”
This book is an excellent story for teens who wonder what they are called to do. Thalli is a well developed character who is very inquisitive and at times she can be annoying as well. Anomaly is the start of a beautiful and adventurous series and the end will leave you breathless.
