Review of Agio Italian Bistro

When deciding on where to go for Italian food, many people choose one of the national chain restaurants. Is that really where you want to take a first date? C’mon, you want to impress right? Don’t worry; I’m not talking about breaking the bank either! Step into Agio Italian Bistro in Palatine and you are greeted with a romantic restaurant complete with large booths, dim lighting, and oversized chandeliers. Ambience, check!

Even though you may take a date here, don’t worry about your breath. Remember, if you both eat garlic then your breath doesn’t stink! On that note my evening started with the Salsiccia e pepperoni (sausage and peppers) and the antipasto tray. Peppers are great for people who enjoy a little sweetness. Roasted sweet peppers and roasted sweet Italian sausage combine for a familiar but classic combination. The antipasto tray had a nice assortment of olives, peppers, prociutto, and cured salami.

For main entrees my dining companion went for a standard chicken alfredo and I decided on the Saltinbocca di Vitello (veal). The alfredo was pretty straightforward with a nice balanced cream sauce, al dente pasta, and tender chunks of white meat chicken. It was simple but well executed. Following my server's advice I chose the fork tender veal that was topped with prociutto, mozzarella, and sage. Good call! This tender veal was both creamy and a little salty at the same time!

For dessert many diners opt out or share just one dessert. Ah, but if you choose the chef trio you get to share 3 desserts on the same plate! First bite was the surprisingly light and creamy dark chocolate mousse. Second bite was the crisp apple tart and the cool hazelnut gelato. Last bite was a bit of a disappointment in the canoli. Maybe a touch too sweet?

Most items cost in the low to mid $20 range with many choices below $20. Overall Agio offers an inviting atmosphere, fair prices, and food that is worth a return trip. So if you earn a second date, your visit to Agio just might have helped you out! Rating *** and ½ out of *****.
