With an eclectic mix of sounds Nightwish’s Imaginaerum is the soundtrack of a dream. From start to finish the album takes you on a journey deep into your imagination with orchestral arrangements, heavy riffs, and powerful vocals.
Imaginaerum is Nightwish’s sophomore release with Anette Olson, who replaced former lead singer Tarja Turunen in 2007. To say Annette had big shoes to fill is an understatement, but she did a decent job bringing more of a Rock N Roll bad girl vocal style as opposed to Tarja’s operatic vocals. On this album, Anette gets to flex her vocal muscles a bit more then on The Dark Passion Play. For instance during “Ghost River” Anette’s voice is theatrical, so much so you can picture fainting in a live performance. Then there’s “Slow Love Slow” where Anette takes on the vocals of a 1930’s jazz singer.
Imaginaerum is a rich album where every song is different from the last and is a great addition to any music collection. The only flaw is the spectre of Tarja continues to haunt the band and asking what might’ve been.
