Having crawled around behind the scenes of the fashion industry for awhile, I got to see what the industry is really like. I never really liked America's Next Top Model, and I liked them even less when a model I knew was made to look like a fool on the show. Tyra's tirades always seemed to over the top, and their shoots left much to be desired.
Enter fashion veteran, Naomi Campbell to resuscitate the modeling competition. Her strength and her fiery reputation are balanced by Karolina Kurkova's quiet competence and Coco Rocha's exuberance. Nigel Barker comes in as the announcer and his photo history comes out in quietly accurate critiques. The three models build teams of neophyte hopefuls, and they take their duties and competitions seriously. This is the real deal.
The categories make perfect sense. Best walk, most usable photos, one try test shots, walk offs- Naomi, Karolina, and Coco bring a fresh reality to what had been a tired genre. It's more professional, and the girls are really looking at this as a chance to make it in the real modeling industry. To see professionals come down to earth and really mentor these new girls is amazing.
The models come off as three-dimensional, intelligent, and realistic. I love how they're given a chance to defend their position and change the judge's minds. We see in full detail why some people make it and some don't. How to handle situations like an adult, and how to back up your boasts with hard work. I love this show.
I'm catching up on all the episodes on the Oxygen website, and I'm enjoying the layers and the dynamics of the models' interactions. I can't wait to see who wins!
