Review: Naomi Pilgrim’s ‘No Gun’

Naomi Pilgrim 'No Gun'

Spotify has a way of creeping new music up on you by way of advertisements, but none have been as arresting as Naomi Pilgrim’s ‘No Gun.’ One look at the Swedish and Barbadian beauty was enough to make me listen and her velvety vocals were enough to make me stay. Sixteen replays later, I now find myself, like many others, obsessively awaiting the release of her EP. But, until then, I’ll be abusing the refresh button on Pilgrim’s Soundcloud and Twitter pages until I’m satisfied. Though, good things come to those who wait and Pilgrim is no stranger to it. Like many other musicians, she’s been making music for her entire life and she was just 14 when she decided to become a singer, but decided against joining the ranks of teenaged-burnout sensations. Instead, at the ripe age of 29, Pilgrim gives us pop that’s less bubblegum and more mature. ‘No Gun’ is surprisingly dark and one might forget that as the syrupy beats and Naomi’s voice collide to create something deeply original and existential. Its a melodramatically apathetic but eye-opening track that juxtaposes good and bad, to reveal the essence of life. Pilgrim’s sound is full-bodied and her lyrics playfully philosophical. ‘No Gun’ is a vibe just as Pilgrim describes herself as being music. Period. Pleasantly chill and dreamy, Naomi Pilgrim is hitting all the right notes. ‘No Gun’ is a refreshing indicator of things to come from this angel and we’ve waited long enough for someone to save us from pop’s epic, ongoing cast of failing ‘characters.’ Pilgrim’s as human as it gets.
